A build up of methane gas from a herd of  cows has caused an explosion on a farm in Germany.

The blast, caused by a concentration of gas emitted by a group of 90 cows, damaged the roof of their cow shed – leaving one of the animals injured.

High levels of the gas had built up in the structure in the central German town of Rasdorf.

Then “a static electric charge caused the gas to explode with flashes of flames,” police said in a statement.Emergency services attended the farm and took gas readings to test for the risk of further blasts, said local media.

One cow was treated for burns.

Methane emitted by cows worldwide is believed to contribute to global warming.

Cows are believed to emit up to 500 litres of methane – a potent greenhouse gas – each per day.
