HE’S got no arms – but he doesn’t lack guts!

Now the determination of the boy who wrote his matric with his toes has paid off. NOT ONLY DID HE PASS – HE QUALIFIED TO GO TO UNIVERSITY!

Today Lehlohonolo “Lucky Boy” Mafela will head for Klerksdorp, where he has been invited to attend the official announcement of the North West province results.

The 19-year-old student from Matshepe Village, near Lichtenburg, was born without arms and made headlines last month when Daily Sun featured him studying for his final exams. He was writing with his toes!

Daily Sun spoke to Lehlohonolo yesterday as he awaited the release of the results.
“I am not fearful, panicky or afraid of what might come. I am instead hopeful and full of joy in my heart because I am looking forward to entering the gates of a higher learning institution,” he told the People’s Paper yesterday.

“I am excited because I am going to celebrate the whole week. I speak with confidence because I know I worked hard and wrote my final examination well. There is no way I cannot make it. That will never happen.”

Lehlohonolo insisted failure was not in his vocabulary.
“But it would be a disappointment and I don’t want to talk about it.”

He advised other matriculants not to despair if they failed.
“Go back to class and do your best,” he said.

Although Lehlohonolo was born without arms, he has never let it stand in his way. He taught himself to do the things around the house that other people do naturally – like gardening.

One person who will also be delighted with his success is his mother Gadifele, who has stood by her son despite his disability and inspired him to strive for success.

He taught himself to do the things that other people do, like gardening and performing other duties around the house?.?.?. and so determined was he to get an education that he taught himself to write with his foot!

Today, the villagers know the energetic teenager as a man of determination who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.

He studied physical science, mathematics, life sciences, Setswana, English, agricultural science and life orientation. Letlhohonolo’s proud mother Gadifele said life was a struggle when her son was young.
